Platforming segments, enemy encounters, boss fights and discovering secrets require use of the right companion at the right time, and for the most part, it's apparent what the player is supposed to do. The companion mechanic works fine for Owlboy, but there is nothing special about the gameplay. Instead, the gameplay revolves around Otus' ability to carry his companions, who have unique abilities: a shooting attack, a flamethrower to burn down obstacles, a Spider-Man-esque slinging ability, and more.
He has a spin attack and a roll that allows him to move faster. Having finally completed his owl lessons, he can fly. Accompanying each beautifully composed scene is wonderful music and sound effects. The art also brings a lot of clarity it is immediately obvious what is part of the background and what is a platform Otus can step on or an object that can be interacted with. The visual style is similar to games long past and brings back memories of old-school platformers, but the quality and detail of the art make it apparent that Owlboy is modern-day. The most striking thing about Owlboy is its presentation. Along the way, Otus meets other friends as the group tries to get to the bottom of the attack. Otus leaves town with fellow outcast Geddy to try and right his wrongs. The townspeople are upset because a pirate attack on the city happened when Otus was supposed to stand watch. Otus' owl teacher is disappointed with his progress at tasks like carrying objects and learning to fly. At the beginning of the game, things aren't going great for the young owl.
Owlboy tells the story of Otus, an owl without the ability to speak.
